1.1 Crop, livestock and fish diversity
Purpose of indicator
Relevant for the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework Target 10 on ‘Proportion of agricultural area under productive and sustainable agriculture’, where the Agrobiodiversity Index is a complementary indicator (CBD/COP/15/L.26). The Agrobiodiversity Index includes various measures of agrobiodiversity, including crop and livestock diversity.
Key Metadata
| Metadata Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Indicator Name | Crop, livestock and fish diversity |
| Theme | Agrobiodiversity |
| SDGs Targeted | |
| Data Source | Household survey |
| Measurement | Gap in diversity of crop varieties (or species) and fish and livestock breeds (or species) on the farm, measured using data on richness relative to the local maximum. |
| Measurement Units | Count with associated production area recorded in hectares, disaggregated by crop and animal species and ideally also variety/breed |
Guidance on Measurement
This indicator can be calculated by collecting data on the:
- Count of crop varieties and species, and the relative area occupied.
- Count of livestock breeds and species.
- Count of fish breeds and species.
These data can be collected as part of a household survey. To verify the data, and if time allows, the researcher and farmer could conduct a transect of the farm and discuss and record where different crops are planted.
Guidance on Data Entry and Reporting
Be sure to use the same area units for all species/varieties/breeds, so that diversity indices can be calculated. Crop and livestock varieties/breeds and species names should be stored in the local language and also using their scientific and English names to enable comparisons across sites. A local agronomist may need to help identify the scientific and English names.
